as long as HW1 is concerned the backup can be done in two ways:
If you use it with Greenaddress you can generate the seed with the webapp, writedown the seed and store it then you write it on HW1 dongle. Doing this you can always write an other dongle from the original written down seed.
If you want to genererate the seed inside the dongle because you trust the RNG you can extract the dongle, put it in an other computer safe and disconnected with a text editing app open and the dongle will sit the seed on the screen. You will in this way be able to save the seed for backup.
